The Rider-Waite tarot deck is probably the most popular Tarot deck in the Western world and is an excellent choice for those new to Tarot. Have fun learning to read the cards for yourself or branch out and impress family and friends with your reading skills.
The cards, drawn by artist Pamela Colman-Smith and commissioned by academic and mystic Arthur Edward Waite, were the first to use detailed pictures on the pip or minor arcana cards as well as on the trump or major arcana cards. The cards were first published in 1909 by the Rider Company. While the images are deceptively simple, in fact almost child-like, the details and backgrounds hold a wealth of symbolism.
The deck contains 78 cards - 22 major arcana or trump cards (Magician, Devil, Lovers etc) and 56 minor arcana cards divided into the four suits - Wands, Pentacles, Swords and Cups.
Other names for this tarot deck include: Rider-Waite-Smith, Waite-Smith, Waite-Colman Smith or simply the Rider deck.
